BBEST a successful event

1st BBEST is on its third day, with very interesting speeches presented by researchers from many different countries.
Total attendance is 527 people, 83% Brazilians and the balance coming mostly from the USA and Western Europe.

In its first day, the 1st Brazilian BioEnergy Science adn Technology Conference showed interesting discussions and presentations.

Mr. Henrique Amorim, CEO at Fermentec, from Piracicaba, Brazil, showed his company's vinasse fermemtation technology, in which yeasts work at high levels of ethanol.

Mr. Marcos Jank, president of UNICA, informed that his entity supports research on new fermentation and energy generation technologies through CTC, Centro de Tecnologia Canavieira, a leading institution on cellulosic fermentation.
In a separate note, Mr. Jank made a comment that Brazilian ethanol is being paid a premium of $.75/gal over corn ethanol in California, for being recognized for its low GHG footprint. This is $.21/gal above the US $.54/gal surcharge. Exports are already taking place.

Ethanol Summit 1

A seção matinal de hoje, 6 de junho/2011 teve um painel muito interessante com a presença de quatro representantes de empresas petrolíferas,Mark Gainsborough (Shell), Phillipe Boisseau (Total), Phil New (BP)e Miguel Rosseto (Petrobras) e mais Vinod Khosla (Khosla Ventures).
Todos os quatro representantes de empresas petrolíferas enfatizaram a importância dos biocombustíveis no futuro dos negócios em energia, mas foi Vinod Khosla que roubou a cena afirmando que as empresas das quais ele participa (Amyris, Koskata, dentre outras) investem mais em pesquisa em biocombustíveis do que as petroleiras e que em 10 anos a conversão de biomassas em hidrocarbonetos será mais importante que em etanol.

The morning section today, 6th June/2011, had a very interesting panel with four representatives from the oil industry Mark Gainsborough (Shell), Phillipe Boisseau (Total), Phil New (BP)e Miguel Rosseto (Petrobras) plus Vinod Khosla (Khosla Ventures).
All four oil company representatives emphasised the importance of biofuels in the future of energy companies, but it was Vinod Khosla who called attention making a point that his companies (Amyris, Koskata, among others) invest more on biofuels than the oil companies and that in 10 years from today biomass conversion to hydrocanbons will be more important than to ethanol.

Petrobras announces new partnership on Ethanol

Petrobras announced yesterday having entered a new strategic partnership with "Usina Boa Vista S.A." and "SMBJ Agroindustrial S.A", through its subsidiary Petrobras Biocombustíveis (PBio), aimimg the growing ethanol production.

Usina Boa Vista's mill is located in the State of Goias and has a cane crushing capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per year.

The deal will lead to a new venture called "Nova Fronteira Bioenergia S.A.", which will control Usina Boa Vista S.A. and SMBJ Agroindustrial S.A.

PBio will make a further subscription equivalent to Euro 192 million in shares and own 49% of the new society's equity.
Under the terms of the agreement, PBio will have the preference to acquire up to 49% of the ethanol and power produced by the new company.

Petrobras starts biodiesel partnership in Portugal

Petrobras released information that the company's board approved the creation of a joint venture with Galp Energia, from Portugal, intended to produce biodiesel in Portugal.

Production, which is due to start in 2015, will be of approximately 250,000 tonnes/year, 100% targeting the European market. Total investment is estimated as Euro 178 million.

The new biodiesel plant will use palm tree oil to be produced in Brazil as feedstock. The joint venture will invest in new palm tree plantations.
