Brasil Ecodiesel Releases 2009 Results
Brasil Ecodiesel, one the main biodiesel producers in Brazil, went through a financial reorganization and a revision on its strategic plan in 2009, year in which it achieved positive operating results for the first time since its incorporation in 2006.
The company's gross margin reached 17%, against negative figures in 2008 and biodiesel production in 2009 was 152,000 cubic meters.
As part of the new strategy, two plants which used castor beans as feedstock and one obsolete grain crushing facility, were shut down and the farms that couldn't grow other grains than castor beans were sold.
Brasil Ecodiesel still faces some challenges related to sustainability regulations, such as the revocation of the "Social Seal" for two biodiesel plants by the Brazilian Ministry of Agricultural Development (MDA). This governamental act is being disputed by Brasil Ecodiesel, seeking its cancellation.

Brazilian government revokes Ecodiesel's certificate
Brazil’s largest biodiesel producer, Brasil Ecodiesel, had their “Social Fuel certificate” for their two largest plants revoked by the country’s Agriculture Development Ministery.
That certificate is related to the social sustainability of the company’s operations, like purchasing feedstocks from small properties in the vicinity from their plants. As the certificate is mandatory for biodiesel producers to qualify to participate in official biodiesel auctions promoted by ANP (National Petroleum Agency), Brasil Ecodiesel may not be able to sell their biodiesel for as long as one year.
As a consequence, the company's stock fell 9.3% last Friday, March 5.

Petrobras Biocombustiveis, subsidiary created by Petrobras to concentrate their ethanol and biodiesel operations, announced today losses of BLR 92 million, equivalent to $52 million, or Euro 38 million, in the fiscal year ended 31st December 2009, their first year in operation.
According to company statements, the loss is due to the fact that their three biodiesel plants, with 326 million litres per year combined capacity, went on stream in the second Quarter 2009 only and also to high feedstock prices in Northeastern Brazil, where two of their three plants are located.

Ethanol price increases 50% in Brazil
Ethanol (E100) price at the pump in Brazil increased more than 50% in some States, in a few months, for two reasons.
The low sugar-cane production at this time of the year (the wet season in Southeastern Brazil), and the low production of the Indian sugar cane crop this year, which led to a sharp increase in sugar prices, driving Brazilian mills’ interest to that market and reducing Ethanol production.
Brazilian government announced a reduction on the percentage of ethanol blended into gasoline (from E25 to E20), aiming to increase ethanol availability and reducing E100 prices.

Petrobras starts Brazil's first ethanol fueled power plant
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 19 January 2010
Petrobras’ Juiz de Fora power plant will become the country’s first ethanol-fueled power plant.
Since 31 December the plant has been using ethanol on an experimental basis. Now, in its efforts to create alternative sources of power, a 45MW turbine has been adapted that can be used with ethanol or gas.
The ethanol refinery is the newest addition to the company’s already long line of power plants totaling 7,028MW, including 14 natural gas power plants (5,820MW), 12 fuel oil power plants (892MW) and 16 small hydropower plants (316MW).
There has been a 30% decrease in nitrogen oxides emissions since the plant started using ethanol, 13 days ago.

Petrobras enters biogas supply agreement
Rio de Janeiro, 19 January, 2010
In Brazil, Petroleo Brasileiro (Petrobras) has signed an agreement with Gas Verde S.A. to supply 200,000 m3 of biogas per day.
Replacing natural gas, the biogas will be generated by Gas Verde, from the Jardim Gramacho landfill in Rio de Janeiro to the Petrobras Duque de Caxis plant.
It is thought that the project will reduce greenhouse emissions. As well as helping to recover the mangrove close to the landfill, the project aims to recover the plant life that used to grow on the 3 million m2 landfill site. The living conditions of people living nearby will hopefully be improved and 2 billion litres of liquid waste will be treated every day.
